Jon Brassel opened his law practice in Annapolis in 1976. Since then, he has tried lengthy jury trials in state and federal courts in numerous jurisdictions all over Maryland and the District of Columbia, and has won million dollar verdicts for victims of medical malpractice and defective products. He is National Counsel for several corporations and he and his team of lawyers have successfully defended thousands of environmental cases throughout the country. Jon has been recognized as a Maryland "Super Lawyer" for the last nine years, the top medical malpractice attorney in Anne Arundel County for the last two years, and voted as one of the top 100 trial lawyers in Maryland.
Jennifer Alexander is an experienced criminal and civil trial attorney who has tried hundreds of cases in her legal career, in both state and federal courts. Ms. Alexander spent nearly six years working as an Assistant State's Attorney at the Anne Arundel County State's Attorney's Office. While a prosecutor, Ms. Alexander was a member of the Violent Crimes Trial Team, and regularly prosecuted high profile violent crimes including being the lead prosecutor on the Annapolis Mall shooting trial. In 2008, Ms. Alexander returned to the firm to resume practicing law with Jon Brassel. Since rejoining the firm, Ms. Alexander has focused her litigation practice in the areas of criminal defense, DUI/DWI defense, personal injury and civil litigation defense. In 2009, Ms. Alexander's peers voted her a "Leading Lawyer" in What's Up Annapolis magazine. In 2011 - 2013, Ms. Alexander has been recognized by "Super Lawyers" as a "Maryland Rising Star." Stacey Rice is an experienced family law, criminal and civil trial attorney who has tried hundreds of cases in her career. Ms. Rice spent four years working as an Assistant State’s Attorney at the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office. While with the State’s Attorney’s Office, Ms. Rice successfully prosecuted many criminal matters including felony burglaries, assaults, drunk driving, and drug possession cases. Ms. Rice worked the last six years zealously advocating for her clients in the areas of family law, criminal defense, juvenile cases, administrative hearings and general civil litigation. In 2009, Ms. Rice’s peers voted her a “Leading Lawyer” for criminal law litigation, and 2010 - 2012 a "Leading Lawyer" for the practice area of family law, in What’s Up Annapolis magazine. Ms. Rice has been recognized for her work in family law as one of Maryland’s “Super Lawyer's" in 2012 - 2016. Ms. Rice has been chosen as one of Maryland's top 50 Women Lawyers by Super Lawyers for 2016.
Michelle Smith is an associate with the firm. She spent over 20 years working as an Assistant State’s Attorney at the Anne Arundel County State’s Attorney’s Office, including 6 years as Chief of the State’s Attorney District Court Division for both Annapolis and Glen Burnie. While a prosecutor, Ms. Smith handled thousands of criminal and traffic matters in Maryland’s District, Circuit and Juvenile courts, from DUI cases to Homicides, including hundreds of Jury and Court trials. In addition to her own caseload, Ms. Smith helped train most of the new prosecutors coming into the State’s Attorney’s office. She focused in domestic matters and over the past 4 years has been the sole felony prosecutor assigned to handle all Family and Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking cases in Anne Arundel County, as well as all U-Visa Certification Requests. As a leader in the field of Family and Domestic violence, Ms. Smith spent years training police officers, Judges, prosecutors and other lawyers on these issues. She was selected to serve on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Network Against Domestic Violence and chaired the Network’s Legislative Committee, participating in the passage of numerous important pieces of Family and Domestic Violence reform legislation over the past fourteen years. Ms. Smith now focuses her practice in the areas of family law.
Elizabeth Pfenson is an associate with the firm and primarily concentrates her practice in the area of family law. Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Pfenson began her career as a Law Clerk for Judge Glenn T. Harrell, Jr., Senior Judge of the Court of Appeals of Maryland. While clerking for Judge Harrell, she participated in the drafting and editing of various civil and criminal matters. Ms. Pfenson graduated magna cum laude from Notre Dame Law School (J.D. 2014). During her time at NDLS, Ms. Pfenson was an Articles Editor for the Notre Dame Law Review. While at NDLS, she tailored her law school experience to the extent possible around family law, taking courses and directed readings on subjects including family law, the Hauge Convention (concerning international child abductions), custody dispute outcomes, alternative dispute resolution, federal income taxation, trial advocacy, deposition skills, and juvenile law.
Kelly Kylis is an associate with the firm and primarily concentrates her practice in the area of general civil litigation. Prior to joining the firm, Ms. Kylis completed a two-year judicial clerkship with the Honorable Clayton Greene, Jr., of the Court of Appeals of Maryland. As a clerk for Judge Greene, Ms. Kylis assisted with a variety of civil and criminal cases. Her clerkship with the highest court of the state has provided Ms. Kylis valuable insight into judicial reasoning and the judicial process in Maryland. Ms. Kylis graduated cum laude from the Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law (J.D. 2013). Ms. Kylis is admitted to the Maryland State Bar. She is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association, the Anne Arundel County Bar Association, and the Women’s Bar Association of Maryland.
